How One CASC Senior Found His Path

When Daniel looks at photos from his son William’s recent graduation, he sees something he wasn’t always sure would be possible: genuine happiness and confidence about the future. 

This spring, William graduated from Cyber Academy of South Carolina (CASC) while simultaneously earning not one, but two associate degrees through dual enrollment at York Technical College. According to his counselor, he is the first student in the school’s history to accomplish that feat. 

But William’s journey to graduation wasn’t always a smooth one. 

Finding the Right Learning Environment 

Before enrolling at CASC, William struggled in a traditional classroom setting. As a student on the autism spectrum, he faced challenges that made the classroom environment increasingly difficult to navigate. 

“He was very smart,” Daniel said. “It wasn’t about intelligence. It was about processing information in a way that worked for him.” 

As bullying and anxiety began affecting both his mental and physical health, William’s academic performance suffered. Eventually, the family realized they needed a different approach. 

That’s when they discovered CASC. 

“The teachers were really accommodating,” Daniel said. “He could work at his own pace, take breaks when he needed them, and learn in a way that made sense for him.” 

The results were immediate. William’s grades improved dramatically, and he quickly earned a place on the honor roll, where he remained throughout the rest of his high school career. 

A Conversation That Changed Everything 

While exploring elective options, William’s counselor introduced the family to CASC’s dual enrollment opportunities. At the time, college wasn’t even on William’s radar. 

“He was 100% not going to college,” Daniel said. “In fact, there was a time when he wasn’t sure he even wanted to finish high school.” 

After visiting York Technical College and learning about its Industrial Maintenance Technology program, William decided to give it a try. 

That decision changed the trajectory of his life. 

Over the next several years, he completed his high school coursework while earning associate degrees in industrial maintenance technology and mechatronics. He graduated magna cum laude and made the dean’s list throughout his college experience. 

Looking Ahead 

Today, William is exploring career opportunities in advanced manufacturing and robotics, fields that align with his interests and strengths. 

“There are companies competing for him right now,” Daniel said. “He discovered that the world is much bigger than he thought, and that there’s a place for him in it.” 

For Daniel and his family, the transformation has been remarkable. 

“We weren’t always sure what his future would look like,” he said. “Now we know he’s going to be okay. He has ambition, confidence, and a plan. CASC truly changed his life.” 

William’s story is a powerful reminder that when students are given the flexibility, support, and opportunities they need, they can achieve more than anyone imagined, including themselves.
