Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Kendall Moseley – Finding Passion for Biology in the Virtual Classroom
For Ms. Moseley, teaching has always been about helping students make sense of complex ideas. She began her career in 2010 at a traditional school in upstate South Carolina before stepping into a leadership role as an assistant principal. But after the birth of her third child, she knew it was time for a change.
“I was in middle school administration, and after having our third child, I decided maybe that position wasn’t the right fit for that season of life,” she said.
In 2022, she joined the Cyber Academy of South Carolina (CASC) as a science teacher. Since then, she has taught a variety of courses, from earth science and chemistry to environmental science. But one subject stands above the rest.
“Mainly, my passion is biology,” she said. “It’s difficult content to teach, but I love it.”
Teaching the Science Every Student Needs
Biology is a key course for high school students in South Carolina. As a state-tested subject, it’s required for graduation, which means Ms. Moseley connects with nearly every student who passes through CASC.
“Everyone has to take biology,” she explained. “So, I get to see almost every student that comes through the school.”
With students ranging from ninth graders to seniors, Ms. Moseley focuses on helping them navigate challenging concepts and succeed on the state’s End-of-Course exam. For many students, biology can feel intimidating – but Ms. Moseley enjoys finding ways to make it accessible.
“A part of my job is figuring out how to take this content that is so difficult and make it applicable to their lives,” she said.
Making Science Hands-On… in a Virtual Classroom
Ms. Moseley is often asked how science labs work in a virtual environment. At CASC, students still get meaningful lab experiences through interactive technology.
“We use a platform called Gizmos, and it’s really cool because it’s an interactive lab,” she explained.
Teaching virtually has also pushed Ms. Moseley to expand her own skills, particularly when it comes to technology and data.
“Since joining the world of online education, I feel like my knowledge of technology has increased so much,” she said. “I’ve also learned to analyze data much better than I did in the past.”
Connecting Science to Real Life
One of Ms. Moseley’s favorite units to teach is genetics – a topic that quickly becomes personal for students.
“They love genetics,” she said. “That’s when I learn the most about them and their families.”
From eye color to inherited traits, students begin to see how biology directly relates to their own lives.
“They’ll say, ‘Oh, I got that from my dad!’ or start talking about traits in their family,” she said.
Those moments are when science stops feeling abstract and becomes meaningful.
Supporting Every Student’s Journey
At CASC, Ms. Moseley works with students from different backgrounds and learning experiences. Some arrive passionate about careers in medicine or science, while others simply need support navigating a challenging subject.
For this science teacher, that’s what makes teaching so rewarding.
“Helping students succeed in something they once thought was too difficult – that’s the best part of the job,” she said.
