Cyber Academy of South Carolina Senior Earns Prestigious Gates Scholarship

Stories & Spotlights
Student Spotlight Congratulating Desmond

For Desmond, a senior at Cyber Academy of South Carolina (CASC), transitioning to online school during middle school helped create a learning environment where he could truly thrive.

After attending a traditional school through part of sixth grade, Desmond and his family decided virtual learning would be a better fit. “I decided to make the transition online because I believed it could help me better focus on my work and just have less distractions,” he shared.

That decision ultimately shaped the rest of his academic journey. Since starting full-time online school in seventh grade, Desmond says the experience has helped him find calm while also building stronger relationships with teachers.

“My relationship with teachers improved a lot thanks to online learning,” he explained. “I was more confident asking questions if I needed help, and there was more time to go over concepts I was confused about.”

Exploring Passions Through Technology and Creativity

Throughout high school at CASC, Desmond discovered a passion for animation, coding, and game design – interests that helped shape his future goals.

“I want to get into game development,” he said. “I’m leaning more toward indie development because of how experimental the ideas can be.”

Desmond has already started preparing for that future through dual enrollment courses and Python programming classes. This fall, he plans to attend college to study computer science.

Beyond academics, he is actively involved in school activities, including Beta Club, robotics competitions, esports and art club. One of his favorite experiences involved helping design a pulley system during a robotics challenge using LEGO pieces.

He also practices martial arts and recently earned his brown belt after training since he was 11 years old.

A Scholarship Recognizing Perseverance

This year, Desmond was selected as a recipient of the highly competitive Gates Scholarship, earning a scholarship for his undergraduate education. He was chosen as one of just 750 students nationwide from more than 61,000 applicants.

Desmond said perseverance became a major theme throughout his scholarship essays and interviews.

“I mainly wrote about perseverance,” he shared.

As he prepares to graduate and begin his next chapter, Desmond credits CASC’s interactive and adaptable learning environment with helping him grow both academically and personally.

“It helped me understand things better,” he said. “It made learning feel less predictable and more engaging.”

We look forward to seeing where Desmond’s perseverance, creativity and passion take him next.
