Building Leaders, Creators, and Community: How Mr. Walters Shapes Student Success at Cyber Academy of South Carolina
For more than a decade, Mr. Walters has dedicated his career to supporting students in meaningful, creative, and transformative ways. Now in his eighth year at Cyber Academy of South Carolina (CASC) – and his 11th year in education overall – he continues to play a key role in shaping student experiences both inside and beyond the virtual classroom.
Finding His Fit in Virtual Education
Before joining CASC, Mr. Walters taught in a variety of educational settings, including the Department of Juvenile Justice and traditional middle school classrooms. While those experiences were impactful, he found himself searching for an environment that offered greater flexibility and an opportunity for connection. That search led him to virtual education – where he discovered a learning model that truly resonated.
“When COVID happened, we were already familiar with the system,” he shared. “We were fortunate to be in a place where we already understood the value and structure of virtual learning.”
Leading the CASC CTE Program
Today, Mr. Walters serves as one of the leads for Career and Technical Education (CTE), helping guide a growing department that offers students pathways in fields such as computer programming, business, marketing, and more. While his role focuses on leadership and support for educators, he remains closely connected to the heartbeat of student learning and achievement.
In addition to his leadership in CTE, Mr. Walters teaches English 1 and is very involved in student life. He has served as the lead sponsor for Beta Club for the past eight years, helping students earn statewide and national recognition through competitions in visual arts, academics, and leadership. Under his guidance, CASC students consistently qualify for national events and have earned multiple top placements across South Carolina and the nation.
Building Leaders Beyond the Classroom
He also leads the school’s Book and Creative Writing Club – affectionately known as “YAWL Club” – and serves as a co-sponsor for Student Council. Whether mentoring aspiring artists, supporting emerging leaders, or cheering on students at competitions, his commitment to student growth extends far beyond the classroom.
One of his proudest moments this year includes seeing a CASC student selected as a statewide Beta leadership representative – an achievement that shows the talent and dedication of the students he helps inspire.
Fostering Creativity, Confidence, and Community
From organizing creative competitions to encouraging originality and teamwork, Mr. Walters believes in giving students the space to express themselves, build confidence, and pursue their passions. “Our students come from all across the state,” he said. “Seeing them come together, collaborate, and succeed – it’s what makes this work so meaningful.”
At Cyber Academy of South Carolina, learning isn’t confined to a classroom. Thanks to our passionate educators like Mr. Walters, it’s an experience rooted in creativity, leadership, and opportunity – helping students not only succeed academically, but discover who they’re meant to become.
