Finding Her Voice: Myra’s Journey at the Cyber Academy of South Carolina
For Myra, an 11th-grade student based in Dorchester County, South Carolina, high school has been anything but ordinary – in the best way. Since enrolling at the Cyber Academy of South Carolina (CASC) as a freshman, she has embraced new opportunities, built meaningful connections, and discovered her voice both inside and outside the virtual classroom.
A Fresh Start with New Opportunities
After attending traditional schools through middle school, Myra was ready for a different path. She chose CASC out of a desire to explore more possibilities and step outside the routine of a traditional school schedule.
That decision has paid off. At CASC, Myra has found an environment that has helped shape her into a more confident and well-rounded individual. From balancing academics with a part-time job at a local clothing store to taking advantage of programs that support working students, she has been able to create a schedule that works for her life.
Leadership, Growth, and Finding Confidence
One of the most impactful parts of Myra’s experience has been her involvement in extracurricular activities – especially Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and student council.
In Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Myra has grown into a strong leader, currently serving as president after previously holding roles as historian and vice president. What started as a way to try something new quickly became a space where she could challenge herself – particularly in public speaking.
“FBLA pushed me out of my shell,” she shared. “It helped me become more confident and find my voice.”
Her involvement doesn’t stop there. Through student council, Myra helps plan events, organize activities and create opportunities for students to connect – both online and in person. These experiences have not only strengthened her leadership skills but also allowed her to build lasting friendships with other students across the state.
Connection in a Virtual World
Through clubs, group chats and meetups, Myra has built a strong network of friends – some of whom even live nearby and some of whom live across the state.
CASC’s community-focused approach has helped her feel connected and supported. Even more meaningful are the relationships she has formed with teachers and school leaders, who know her by name and happily support her growth.
Looking Ahead: A Passion for Storytelling
As Myra looks toward the future, she has her sights set on a career in journalism – with a possible focus on politics. Her passion is rooted in a desire to tell meaningful stories and amplify voices that are often underrepresented.
“I want to make sure everyone’s story gets told,” she said. “Especially young Black girls – I want them to feel seen and heard.”
With her drive, leadership experience, and commitment to making a difference, Myra is already well on her way.
At CASC, she hasn’t just found a school – she’s found her voice.
