Teaching Skills That Matter: How Ms. Skinner Prepares Students for Life Beyond the Classroom 

Based in Woodruff, Ms. Skinner is in her 12th year in education, and her third year at Cyber Academy of South Carolina (CASC). What initially drew her to virtual education was flexibility and balance. What’s kept her at CASC is the impact. 

From mastering digital tools to embracing structured planning and calendars, she’s found that virtual teaching allows her to be an effective educator while embracing more work-life balance. 

Ms. Skinner currently teaches Professional and Leadership Development, a semester-long, certification-based course centered on employability and soft skills. Students complete the Microburst soft skills program, which focuses on communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, productivity, flexibility, and interpersonal skills. To earn their certification, students must score 80% or higher on each of the 10 modules, a standard that pushes them to truly understand the material, not just complete it. 

Ms. Skinner has noticed a clear trend over the years. Communication and flexibility are often the most challenging topics for students, especially as they learn to navigate change, handle conflict, and speak up with confidence. “A lot of students want to avoid uncomfortable situations,” she explains. “But part of growing – personally and professionally – is learning how to face those moments head-on.” 

Many of her students enter the course reserved or hesitant to participate, something Ms. Skinner sees often in virtual learning environments. Through discussion and real-world scenarios, she works to help them find their voice and strengths. 

For Ms. Skinner, the reward comes from watching her students grow – both academically and personally. Whether they’re earning certification cords for graduation or gaining skills they’ll carry into college and a career, she’s proud to know her course equips them for what comes next.
