From Parent to Educator: How One Teacher Found Her Calling at Cyber Academy of South Carolina
When Ms. Workman talks about Cyber Academy of South Carolina (CASC), it’s clear she isn’t just describing a workplace – she’s describing a community she deeply believes in.
Originally from Camden and now based in the Columbia area, Ms. Workman is in her fifth year of teaching – and her fifth year at CASC. Her journey into virtual education, however, started at home.
As a mother of three, Ms. Workman saw firsthand how traditional education is not a good fit for every child. When her daughter enrolled at Cyber Academy in seventh grade, the flexibility and personalized support made an immediate impact. She went on to graduate early – finishing high school in 11th grade – and is now pursuing a business management degree at Strayer University. Seeing her daughter thrive helped Ms. Workman realize that virtual education wasn’t just effective for students; it was the kind of environment she wanted to teach in.
Before entering the classroom, she spent 17 years at Verizon, where she frequently trained new hires and led professional development. Combined with her background in the PACE program and a family full of educators – including a mother who served as an instructor at Fort Jackson, a sister who currently teaches in brick-and-mortar, and an aunt who retired as an assistant principal – the transition into teaching felt natural.
Today, Ms. Workman serves as a Career and Technical Education (CTE) teacher at CASC, teaching courses ranging from Digital Publication Design to Computer Programming. Over the years, she has taken on increasing leadership responsibilities, including department chair and lead teacher roles across CTE and math. She is also heavily involved in student leadership, serving as lead sponsor for Student Council and co-sponsor for Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA).
For Ms. Workman, one of the most powerful aspects of virtual education is connection. “People assume it’s harder to build relationships online,” she says, “but in many ways, it’s the opposite.” Through live classes, breakout rooms, and everyday interactions, she gets to know her students as people – often meeting their families, pets, and home environments along the way.
The flexibility of virtual teaching has also allowed Ms. Workman to maintain a healthy work-life balance, something she values both personally and professionally.
Whether she’s mentoring future business leaders, guiding students through career pathways, or advocating for virtual education as an option that truly meets students where they are, Ms. Workman is proud to “shout it from the mountaintops.” For her, Cyber Academy of South Carolina isn’t just an alternative – it’s an opportunity.
