Alexia’s Journey: Finding Strength at Cyber Academy of South Carolina
For Alexia, a 10th grader at Cyber Academy of South Carolina (CASC), finding the right learning environment has made all the difference. After a difficult experience with virtual learning elsewhere, her family knew they needed something different – something more supportive and consistent.
“When COVID hit, the school system here did not know how to do virtual school,” her mom and Learning Coach shared. “I thought, if we’re going to do this, we need a program that knows how to do it well. It was the best decision we made.”
Now in their third year at CASC, Alexia and her family have found a structure that works -not just academically, but personally.
Learning Without Limits
Alexia’s educational journey is unique. She lives with multiple medical conditions that can make attending a traditional school challenging. Virtual learning has given her the ability to balance her health and education in a way that wasn’t possible before.
Alexia lives with Mosaic Trisomy 22, an extremely rare chromosomal disorder that occurs in roughly 1 in 30,000 to 50,000 births and is often considered life-threatening.
For her family, one of the biggest challenges was finding the right fit school. Frequent medical appointments and hospital stays meant regularly missed weeks of class in a traditional setting, and bullying made things even harder.
The flexibility of online learning has allowed Alexia to stay on track at CASC, while managing more than a dozen complex medical conditions, including asthma, Hydrocephalus, and Dandy-Walker Malformation.
In one recent medical emergency, when the shunt connected to Alexia’s brain failed and required emergency surgery, her family says being at home for school allowed them to act quickly and get her medical care.
“We never know when something could happen medically,” her mom explained. “With CASC, there’s an empathetic approach. It’s not about ‘when is the work due?’ – it’s ‘how is she doing?’ That makes all the difference.”
Growing in Confidence … and Connection
While meeting her individual needs is key, connection has been just as important. Alexia has found her place socially and academically at CASC.
“I’ve made lots of friends,” Alexia said. “We have fun Fridays, field trips, and games. My favorite was a pizza party.”
She’s also discovered new interests and opportunities, including joining the Cyber Soundwaves music club, where she combines her love for singing and dancing.
Academically, Alexia has seen amazing growth. “At first, it felt really new,” she admitted. “But over time, I got more comfortable. I’ve improved a lot.”
Her hard work recently earned her a spot on the A/B Honor Roll – a milestone worth celebrating.
A Supportive Environment for the Whole Family
For Alexia’s family, CASC has provided peace of mind. Smaller class environments, attentive teachers, and built-in support systems ensure Alexia gets the individualized attention she needs.
“She’s not competing with 30 other students for accommodation,” her mom said. “She’s getting what’s specific to her.”
The virtual model has also strengthened family involvement. With both parents actively engaged in her learning, they feel more connected to her progress than ever before.
Looking to the Future
Outside of school, Alexia enjoys drawing, dancing, video games, and exploring her love of K-pop. She dreams of traveling the world one day – South Korea at the top of her list.
“I think I just want a job where I can travel,” she said.
Through it all, Alexia continues to inspire those around her – not only through her resilience, but by sharing her story to help others.
“It makes me feel very proud,” Alexia said, “being able to help other people.”
With the support of her family and the team at CASC, Alexia is building a future defined not by limitations – but by possibility.
