Finding Her Calling in Virtual Education

Stories & Spotlights
Meet Abigail Davis

From a young age, Abigail Davis knew exactly what she wanted to be.

“I was five years old, setting my dolls up in rows and teaching them math,” she laughed. “My dad was really good at math, and I always wanted to follow in his footsteps.”

Today, Ms. Davis is the Middle School Principal at Cyber Academy of South Carolina (CASC), where she leads a thriving virtual community and continues that childhood vision of empowering students through learning.

Celebrating 10-years with Cyber Academy of South Carolina

Ms. Davis joined CASC in 2015 – making this year her 10-year anniversary with the school.

“I got my 10-year pin this July,” she said proudly. “It’s been such a journey.”

But her path to virtual education wasn’t originally part of the plan. After growing up in Iowa and earning a degree in secondary math education from the University of Northern Iowa, Davis moved to South Carolina to escape the brutal winters. She taught in the classroom for several years before pursuing a graduate degree.

Looking for a virtual daytime role while taking night classes, she applied to teach at CASC. What she found was unexpected.

“Once I started teaching virtually, I rediscovered my passion,” she shared. “I got to know my students even better than I did in a physical classroom.”

She taught high school math before transitioning to middle school, later becoming a lead teacher, assistant principal, and now, principal.

Leading a School Built on Relationships

As principal, Ms. Davis supports approximately 1,000 middle school students, and no two days are the same.

“Lots of hats,” she laughed. “Lots of planning, teacher observations, and meetings – but all focused on making sure every student is seen and supported.”

She and her team are committed to preventing students from “falling through the cracks,” staying proactive with academic and social support.

One of the greatest surprises of virtual education, she says, is the closeness between teachers and families.

“You’re literally in their home,” Ms. Davis explained. “Students show us their art projects, their pets … siblings pop in to wave. That connection builds trust and it’s powerful.”

Why Virtual Works for Middle School Students

When parents worry about structure or accountability, Ms. Davis is quick to reassure them.

“We have required live classes, interactive coursework, and we communicate constantly,” she said. “It’s not ‘log in whenever.’ There’s support every step of the way.”

She has seen students thrive thanks to the reduction in distractions and the ability to work at their own pace.

“Some students aren’t learning in a classroom simply because of the environment.
Here, they can focus. They can be themselves.”

Celebrating Students – and Staff – at Every Step

CASC has built a culture that lifts people up.

“We pride ourselves on a strong, positive, growth-minded school culture,” Ms. Davis said.

The school regularly recognizes achievements- both large and small:

  • Weekly staff highlights in a Monday memo
  • Teacher and Staff Member of the Month
  • Students of the Month for every grade
  • Star student celebrations in classrooms
  • Personalized family outreach when students shine

“Teachers reach out just to brag on students,” Ms. Davis explained. “Families should hear from us for the good things, not only when there’s a concern.”

Bringing Students Together in Real Life

While virtual learning gives students flexibility, CASC ensures they still have ways to build friendships and memories offline.

“We do outings across the state every month,” Ms. Davis said. “Families even drive hours to see their teachers in person.”

One of the most beloved traditions? The Middle School Dance each April – complete with a DJ, food, and formal attire – held at the Saluda Shoals River Center in Columbia.

“It’s the highlight of the year,” Ms. Davis said. “There are little crushes … students exchanging numbers … it’s the sweetest thing.”

Meeting Students Where They Are

Seeing the difference virtual education makes has shaped Ms. Davis’ passion and her purpose.

“Learning virtually gives focus back to students and educators,” she said. “We get to focus on what truly matters – learning, connection, and growth.”

From a little girl teaching her dolls to a leader shaping the future of middle school education, Ms. Davis has never wavered in her belief in the power of relationships.

“We empower students to be successful in their own space,” she said. “And that can change everything.”
