Learning Without Limits: How Sephorah and her Learning Coach Are Thriving at Cyber Academy of South Carolina
Sephorah and her family have experienced education in several forms – from traditional public school to virtual learning – and along the way, they’ve discovered an environment that has allowed her to flourish.
Sephorah began her academic journey in a classroom, but midway through first grade, the pandemic shifted learning online. The family quickly learned that virtual education was preferred – offering more flexibility, engagement, and opportunity than they ever expected. When her local school discontinued its virtual option, her mother – and learning coach – Sawn, began searching for alternatives – ultimately discovering Cyber Academy of South Carolina (CASC).
Sephorah officially enrolled in fourth grade and is now a seventh grader who is thriving both academically and personally, and she credits CASC’s supportive teachers, interactive approach and flexibility as key reasons she enjoys school. “My teachers are always willing to help,” she says. “If I need extra support, they’re responsive and encouraging.”
A self-motivated learner, Sephorah is particularly passionate about science and math – subjects she finds challenging in the best way. Her long-term goals are just as ambitious: she hopes to become a payload specialist for NASA and a fighter pilot for the U.S. Air Force. That passion has led her to participate in Civil Air Patrol, where she meets weekly for aerospace education, physical training, and leadership development.
Outside of school, Sephorah has a full schedule that includes travel soccer, volunteering at her local library, Beta Club, National Junior Honor Society, and even creative hobbies like crochet and photography. She is also part of CASC’s Honors classes, Compacted 7th and 8th grade coursework, Advanced Learners Program (ALP), which has introduced her to advanced coursework and opportunities such as the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics Engage & Spark program and as Ambassador at Charter Institute at Erskine.
For Sawn, serving as Sephorah’s learning coach has been both rewarding and empowering. An educator herself, with more than a decade of experience, she values being actively involved in Sephorah’s education. That involvement eventually led her to serve on The Heron Institute school board, the board that oversees operations at CASC, where she helps represent parent and student perspectives while advocating for expanded resources and opportunities.
Together, Sephorah and Sawn are showing what’s possible when education adapts to the student, not the other way around. At Cyber Academy of South Carolina, they’ve found a supportive learning environment that encourages balance and opens doors to a future full of possibility … and beyond.
