Finding Her Voice: Serenitymarie’s Journey to Confidence at Cyber Academy of South Carolina
For Serenitymarie, a sophomore at Cyber Academy of South Carolina (CASC), the path to virtual learning was shaped by both challenge and determination. After moving from New Jersey to South Carolina in 2018, Serenitymarie’s experience in the traditional classroom took a difficult turn.
“I would come home crying,” Serenitymarie shared. “I felt like the teacher didn’t like me… it made me feel dumb for asking something, so I just stayed quiet most of the time.”
Her Learning Coach and mother saw the impact firsthand and knew something had to change. “We needed to do this,” she said. “Virtual school had been on my mind for a while, and I finally decided to take that step.”
Support … and a New Beginning
At CASC, Serenitymarie found something she had been missing: support and encouragement from her teachers.
“It’s easy to contact them,” Serenitymarie said. “If I have questions, I can ask – and they actually encourage it. They’ll say, ‘No, it’s okay,’ even if I ask a lot.”
That reassurance helped her rebuild her confidence in the classroom.
Growing Confidence and Finding Her Voice
What began as a quiet hesitation has transformed into active participation and leadership.
“I used to be very shy,” Serenitymarie explained. “But now I’m the person that goes on mic every time to answer or share.”
That change – and growth – hasn’t gone unnoticed. “Other students have told me they see me as a role model,” she said. “That means a lot.”
Her mother has witnessed the change as well. “Her confidence has increased so much,” she said. “She’s not afraid to speak up anymore.”
As Serenitymarie’s confidence grew, so did her willingness to challenge herself outside the classroom. Inspired by the support and flexibility she found at CASC, she pursued the Congressional Award program, earning bronze, silver and gold certificates and becoming one of the recipients of the 2025 Bronze Congressional Medal. The achievement required completing 100 hours of volunteer service, 50 hours of personal development, 50 hours of physical fitness, and three days of exploration.
A Passion for Learning and Service
Serenitymarie’s interests extend far beyond the virtual classroom. She is actively involved in several school clubs, including HOSA, National Honor Society, Beta Club, and Art Club, where she serves as vice president.
She also dedicates time to volunteering, including weekly service at a local hospital. “I’ve started thinking about a future in the medical field,” she said. “Maybe something like a radiation technician – I’ve always loved biology.”
In addition to her academic and service commitments, Serenitymarie is a creative at heart. She enjoys painting, crocheting, and writing poetry – work that has even been published in anthologies.
The flexibility of virtual learning has also allowed her to expand her academic opportunities. Through CASC’s Flex program, Serenitymarie has been able to customize her schedule while participating in Dual Enrollment courses through Trident Technical College, where she earned credits in Psychology and Introduction to Computers this semester.
That dedication has already helped shape her future. Beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, Serenitymarie will enter as a senior after being approved for early graduation – an accomplishment she says would not have been possible without the opportunities and support she found at CASC.
Looking Towards the Future
“I like the flexibility,” she said. “It gives me time to do everything I’m passionate about.”
Her journey is a testament to what can happen when students are supported, encouraged, and empowered to find their voice – both inside and outside the classroom.
