Finding Confidence and Community: Isabella’s Journey at Cyber Academy of South Carolina

Stories & Spotlights
Student Spotlight

When Isabella started high school, she knew she needed a different kind of learning environment – a new perspective. After experiencing judgment and negativity, she and her family decided to try something new.

As a ninth grader, Isabella enrolled at Cyber Academy of South Carolina (CASC), hoping virtual learning would give her the fresh start she needed.

“I had to switch because people were very judgmental at my old school,” Isabella shared. “My mental state went downhill, and I thought maybe going virtual would help me build confidence and block out the people who wanted to judge.”

Now a tenth grader, Isabella says the decision has made all the difference.

“When I first came to CASC, I didn’t know what to expect,” she said. “But once I actually got here, I realized people weren’t judging me. It made me feel like I belonged.”

Growing In Confidence and Gaining New Skills

Since making the switch to virtual school, Isabella says she has noticed positive changes not just academically, but personally as well.

“I feel like I’ve improved a lot,” she said. “I used to say a lot of negative things about myself, but now I feel more confident.”

She has realized that one of the benefits of online learning has also helped her develop important life skills.

“In the classroom, I didn’t have much flexibility,” Isabella explained. “Now I have the time to plan out my work and get things done.”

She says one of the biggest skills she’s gained is better planning and organization.

“I used to struggle with planning how to get assignments done,” she said. “Now I can sit down, make a plan, and finish things in the right time frame.”

Getting Involved and Taking the Lead

Even in a virtual environment, Isabella has found plenty of opportunities to get involved at CASC. She participates in several student organizations, including Student Council, Beta Club, and the National Honor Society.

“I joined Student Council because I always wanted to do it,” she said. “Being virtual made it feel easier to try.”

This year, Isabella has taken on a leadership role helping plan meetings and presentations for the group.

“We help come up with ideas for things like prom or events,” she said. “It’s really fun.”

She’s also a member of Cyber Soundwaves, a music club where students can showcase their musical talents. Isabella enjoys singing and was even the first student to volunteer to perform for the group.

Finding – and Following – Her Passions

Outside of school, Isabella stays active with a unique hobby: clogging, a dance style similar to tap dancing.

“I really love dancing,” Isabella said. “I started when I was younger, stopped for a while, and then realized I wanted to go back.”

She now practices every week and enjoys being part of a team again.

Looking ahead, Isabella has big goals for her future. She hopes to attend college and pursue a career as a family therapist.

“I want to help families build better relationships with their kids,” she said. “I’ve seen people struggle with that, and I want to help them.”

For Isabella, finding the right learning environment has made all the difference.

“Being at CASC helped me feel more confident,” she said. “It showed me that I really do belong.”
